I did something I thought I would never do again.... I got a puppy. His name is Angel and he is adorable. After having Koko, Cookie, Fudge, Scout, and even sharing in the care and love of my daughter's dog Ginger, I thought I would never have another puppy. But with this pandemic we are in, I got Angel to give me a sense of hope and life. He gives unconditional love and being confined, it has helped a lot. I wouldn't recommend this for everyone, but it has been a blessing for me. I have suffered off and on with depression most of my life and am currently on medication. Not that I got this puppy because of my depression, but I think it helps with handling it. Faith in God and love of my husband, family & friends is what I have to keep looking to. Take care all during this strange time in our world's health crisis.

I love your story and relate... We resisted getting a dog for our girls for such a long time, felt like "one more thing" we'd have to take care of and manage... But... a little under a year ago, we made the "leap" and let our daughters get a Yorkie puppy... I never dreamed this little creature could bring so much joy and healing to our family... she has been so good for all of us... She helps us slow down, she loves us unconditionally, she is always happy to see us and greet us at the door, and she likes nothing better than to be snuggled down next to us... gives all of us a sense of connection... and JOY... takes us out of ourselves every time we get to care for her... she has been our angel for sure.... Would love to meet your Angel some day!
Oh Doreen, I love Angel and love that you have her during this difficult time! I can totally relate to the unconditional love and hope that a dog can bring. I have learned so much from my sweet dog. She has taught me so much. She is so excited for the smallest things--each meal is the best meal ever--she gulps it down even though she eats the same thing every day. She finds joy in such simple things-- being outside, playing with sticks, playing with ants on the sidewalk. And she is happiest when nurtured and given attention. My dog is an especially anxious rescue pup. I am a particularly anxious human. We are a good match. She has taught me so much about how to be kind to myself when I am anxious. What lovely teachers, friends and family members dogs are!!
That is so awesome! I can definitely relate to the benefits of having a dog, especially a puppy. I got a puppy in August 2019. She is so sweet and has been amazing. I can only imagine how much your pup brings love and joy into your life. ❤️
Doreen, I love your story and can relate. I, too, said I'd never get a puppy. However my husband and son really wanted one so I gave in. I can say that our dog, Scout, has been so helpful during this time of social distancing. My son has been really lonely being away from his friends. Scout has been such a sweet playmate and encouragement for all of us. I am glad Angel has been a blessing to you.
Doreen, he is adorable! Thanks for sharing. I also appreciate your vulnerability. So many people battle depression. I, too, have struggled with it, and I'm sure it is at an all time high right now since everyone is isolated and afraid. It's stories like yours that remind us all to open up and rely on each other, as well as seek help from a doctor or counselor if we need it. Thank you for reminding me that I am not alone and that there are a lot of resources for anyone struggling. Your story and your puppy me hope.
Angel. His tongue is always sticking out!
I love this post! Getting a pet is an amazing way to love and be loved during this hard time. We would love to see a picture!
Things have been pretty hard lately and we've all needed to find things to keep us busy and happy for the time being. I'm so glad you found something that works for you. Dogs are a great source of happiness when you're feeling down. @Rilee actually also shared a story about how a dog really helped her. And, I think we have all been pretty depressed because of what's going on right now. But hang in there, we'll get through this. Post a picture of your dog in the comments!
